Indonesia, with the longest coastline in the Asia-Pacific and the second-highest coastline-to-inhabitant ratio, is highly vulnerable to marine plastic pollution, as 80% of ocean plastics originate on land. This vulnerability is exacerbated by its standing as the world's second-most biodiverse country, home to over 31,000 plant species and thousands of animal species. Plastic pollution, including the infiltration of microplastics into habitats, water, soil, and air, poses severe risks to this biodiversity, leading to habitat destruction and endangerment of species. Major contributors to ocean plastic debris include inadequate waste management, littering, and pollution from rivers, tourism, and fishing activities. In response, Indonesia has implemented a national action plan under Presidential Regulation No. 83 of 2018 to reduce marine plastic waste by 70% by 2025, with a reported 41.68% reduction achieved by 2023.
In addition to domestic efforts, Indonesia has strengthened bilateral cooperation with the UAE to combat plastic leakage. This partnership, supported by UNDP, focuses on intercepting plastics in waterways and tackling riverine plastic debris to prevent ocean pollution. The initiative aligns with the nation’s zero-landfill target by 2030, promoting sustainable waste management and cleaner waterways. To ensure effective project execution, the recruitment of Project Assistant for Tackling River Plastic Debris is vital. The role will provide critical support in planning, implementing, and reporting project activities, fostering cross-sectoral collaborations at local and national levels, and supporting partnerships and communication strategies to address plastic pollution in rivers. This position will be integral to ensuring the success of ongoing environmental efforts and the protection of Indonesia’s extensive biodiversity.
